NAS EXAM PREPARATION MATE NA PAPER s std 3--5-8

NCERT has conducted the National Achievement Survey (NAS) for 2017 in Classes 3, 5 and 8 in languages, mathematics, EVS/science and social science on Monday.

NAS is a representative sample of schools from all districts in India aimed at understanding the health of the education system in government and government aided schools.

Findings from the NAS will be used for formulating policies, planning and pedagogical interventions to improve student learning. It is not designed to assess the individual student performance.

This year the NAS is linked to the learning outcomes. The learning gaps will be identified in all the districts of the country.

 In UT Chandigarh, it was conducted in 114 government and government-aided sample schools. About 8811 students participated in the survey. It was carried out by 333 Field Investigators from SCERT and Government College of Education, Sector 20, Chandigarh.

The National Achievement Survey (NAS) is the largest ever national assessment survey in the country and is amongst the largest in the world, was conducted throughout the country today. Union HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar said that the NAS is a transparent and credible exercise done under third party verification. It was conducted for the Classes 3, 5 and 8 in government and government aided schools. The survey tools used multiple test booklets with 45 questions in Classes III and V related to language, mathematics and 60 questions in Class VIII in Mathematics, Language, Sciences and Social Sciences. The competency based test questions developed reflected the Learning Outcomes developed by the NCERT which were recently incorporated in the Right to Education Act (RTE) by the Government of India. Along with the test items, questionnaires pertaining to students, teachers and schools were also used. 

The learning levels of more than 25 lakhs students from 1,10,000 across 700 districts in all 36 States/UTs were assessed. More than 1.75 lakhs trained Field Investigators from outside the government education system were engaged to conduct the learning assessment in the country. To ensure the fairness of the survey, a monitoring team was constituted which consisted of observers from inter-ministerial departments drawn from the State Governments, National and State Observers from Education Departments and multi-lateral organizations. This monitoring team observed the implementation of the survey in all the districts, on the Day of Assessment.

As a part of the Government of Gujarat’s initiative to ensure quality education of students in Government schools and to increase awareness for quality in the education community, the government carries out ‘Gunotsav’ a quality improvement programme in which students are assessed every year since 2009. Since 2011, EI has been involved in supporting the existing Gunotsav programme for 33,900 primary schools in Gujarat. The programme has also been extended to cover 20000 Secondary schools. For the project, EI develops questions and analyse the data for Gunotsav assessment by teachers (school self assessment) and by officers (officer carried out assessment). In addition, detailed diagnostic assessment of learning levels are carried out on a sample basis by trained evaluators 26 districts for classes 3, 5, 7 and 9, in order to gather scientifically validated learning achievement data. Research into student misconceptions are done through student interviews .Schools undergoing remedial program across the state are monitored by EI trainers on a sample basis to check their efficacy. A series of capacity building workshops for state and district personnel to develop latest skills in building and using student assessments, post analysis and dissemination workshops for teachers to understand the insights from the data and incorporate the information in classroom practices are part of the project.
