Pragya was founded in 1995 to address the acute issues of poverty and marginalisation that face indigenous communities in the high altitude Indian Himalayas. Since then, Pragya has worked to protect the natural environment of the Himalayas and support the people who depend on this fragile ecosystem.[2] Pragya is an alliance of practitioners bonded together by a commitment to the cause.
Pragya's early work focused on managing the vulnerable ecological systems and preserving the culture of the communities within the Indian Himalayas. Pragya has been successful in developing solving problems such as the reduction of available water and medicinal plants and livelihood options.[3] The geographic focus has now expanded to include working within hard to reach areas in Nepal and East Africa. Pragya is conducting research and delivering services within the fields of education, health, water and sanitation, natural resource management, renewable energy, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods.
